Kids Art Smart

Studios on the Park discovered a calling in the form of the Kids Art Smart Program.

What began as an experiment resulting from a one-time grant from the Central Coast Wine Classic has developed into the heart and soul of our efforts to share the creative process with our community. Gifts from many other generous donors and volunteers enable us to continue to present the program to all six elementary schools in Paso Robles and now all elementary, middle and high schools in neighboring districts.

Since 2011 more than 10,000 schoolchildren have visited Studios on the Park for hands-on professional art classes completely free of charge. They have studied and created works of art in mediums such as marbilizing, sumi-e resist painting, watercolor, collage, sculpting, ceramics, and printmaking.

Ordinarily, these students (47% of whom are considered low-income and at-risk*) receive little to no formal arts education. The result is a lost opportunity to develop creative thinking and personal expression. Kids Art Smart changes this. We are currently fundraising to ensure that even more students from local schools can experience the joy of art!

“I was extremely proud of my students for their conduct and participation...They had such an amazing and enriching time, and they gained an experience with you that I am not able to provide. I was most pleased with the organization of the day, and all of the art assistants were so patient and encouraging. I can't tell you how much I look forward to being able to do this again next year. I can only hope that your generous donors, who, through their funding to make this possible for my students, know just how valuable this experience was for my children.  In a few words, Studios on the Park ROCKED IT!!!!!” -Mrs. Willis, Teacher Vineyard Elementary School

“The kids and staff thoroughly enjoyed their Studios experience. Many characterized it as the best field trip yet!” -Jill Southern, Principal Templeton Elementary School

"Children have the wonderful uninhibited ability to enjoy, create, and produce their own beautiful art. Through the use of simple hands-on art experiences we give children access to visual and kinesthetic approaches to art. Not only are we giving children visual art experiences, the children are also developing descriptive language. Through the art experience we are able to describe the weather, the animals, the time of day, the environment, the seasons using the art elements. Descriptive language and descriptive art experiences develop confidence, enthusiasm and pride within the child."   -Kathleen Coombs, Teaching Artist

“Thank you so much for letting me watch, learn, and create this wonderful kind of artwork… prints! I loved every second in this art building. The way the art invites you in, the wonderful ideas leaping in your head, and most of all the thought that some one wants to share their knowledge about something unique with you."
