Over the past fifty years, Toni Best has specialized in pine needle basketry, expanding this art to include gourds as a medium on which to weave. Recently branching out and exploring greater use of color and design, Toni has expanded from more conservative art to one illustrating greater freedom.

Toni shares her expertise with students in basketry classes at Studios on the Park. The classes tailored to each student's interest with three project options: filling the gap, undulating coils and free form. No prior experience is necessary and all materials are provided. Cost per class is $85 with all materials included.

Project Options
Filling the Gap
Weave pine needles around prepared gourd and create an opening to be warped and then woven with fiber.

Undulating Coils
Students couch or applique coils on coils which have already been woven.

Free Form
Students coil pine needles around and irregularly shaped gourd into piece only limited by their imagination.


Bread Basket Workshop

Barbara Intrieri, the Basket Case, shares her expertise in teaching participants to hand weave a reed bread basket. This beginners basket introduces the basic weave patterns and techniques that are used in most woven baskets. The various types and sizes of reed and their uses are discussed as well. A full kit is provided and includes flat and round reed and seagrass along with written instructions to create the basket. Instruction and weaving go hand-in-hand so that participants can leave with a completed basket to put in their kitchen. Limited to 5 students. $75 fee includes a kit with all materials and printed directions.
