Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. & Finding Common Ground

January 21

Studios on the Park invites the community to join in this special celebration of the late civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Presented in affiliation with the Common Ground 2019 exhibition at Studios on the Park, the evening's events will include a documentary screening at Park Cinemas, music and a panel discussion at Studios on the Park and a tribute dinner at La Cosecha. Join us for any or all of these exciting activities as we commemorate the legacy of Dr. King.

FILM

The tribute begins at Park Cinemas at 4 pm with the screening of “I Am Not Your Negro,” which envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the minute examination of race in America, using the writer’s original words, spoken by Samuel L. Jackson, and with a flood of rich archival material.

MUSIC

At 5:30 pm, the DJs of Soul Dust Productions add their spin with a mix of soul, funk and civil rights-inspired music.

TALK

At 6 pm, the community is invited to Studios on the Park to attend a conversation with panelists whose lives were impacted by Dr. King’s legacy and the Civil Rights Movement. Join moderator Henry A J Ramos, artist and activist Robbie Conal, City Councilwoman Maria Garcia, and Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Cross Cultural Centers at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Bryan Hubain.

DINNER

Then at 7 pm chef Santos MacDonal of La Cosecha and Il Cortile is serving The Meal That Never Was designed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On the night of his assassination, Dr. King was scheduled to dine at the house of  Reverend Samuel “Billy” Kyles in Memphis. The dinner, with southern favorites to be prepared by women in Kyles’ congregation, is the inspiration for Chef Santos’ three-course tribute menu. Come to The Meal That Never Was and have a meal in Dr. King’s memory.
